Deputy Winfield was shot and killed after being dispatched
to check on a disabled vehicle on State Route 423.
After responding to the call, Deputy Winfield encountered
two men walking along the road and made contact with them.
No further radio contact was made with dispatchers.
A short time later, Deputy Winfield was found shot in his
patrol car which was upside down in a ravine along the
roadway. Deputy Winfield was transported to a local
hospital where he died. The original vehicle was located a
short time later off of Route 23 near Delaware following a
massive manhunt. Two suspects were apprehended later in
the week and were charged with aggravated murder. One of
the suspect was sentenced to 2 years probation for
obstruction of justice. The shooter was convicted and
sentenced to 40 years to life.
Deputy Winfield had served with the Marion County
Sheriff's Department for 6 years. He is survived by his
wife and two children.

Bender

Trooper Bender succumbed to injuries sustained one month
earlier when he was struck by a tractor trailer while
directing traffic at a construction site at US Route 23
and State Route 53 in Wyandot County. He was assigned to
the Marion Post at the time of the incident.
Trooper Bender's father, Deputy William J. Bender, was
killed in an on duty automobile accident on July 2, 1973,
while serving with the Marion County, Ohio, Sheriff's
Department.

Deputy Bender was killed in an automobile accident while
en route to setup a roadblock at Highway 37 and Highway
309. The roadblock was being setup as a result of an
escape from a nearby jail.
Deputy Bender was survived by his wife, daughter, and son.
His son, Trooper William R. Bender, was struck and killed
in the line of duty on November 20, 1982, while serving
with the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Captain Masterson died after
falling on a sidewalk. Captain Masterson was participating
in the advance team for a visit to the City of Marion by
President Warren Harding. As Captain Masterson stepped out
of a vehicle he slipped and struck his head on the
concrete. He succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Captain Masterson had been with the agency for 20 years.

Hostetter

Patrolman Hostetter was shot
and killed while attempting to arrest an armed robbery
suspect. Patrolman Hostetter and another officer were
searching a railroad yard for two suspects wanted in
connection with the robbery.
As Patrolman Hostetter ordered one of the men out of a
railroad car the second suspect opened fire on him,
mortally wounding him. Patrolman Hostetter succumbed to
his wounds the following day.
Both suspects fled the scene. A man was arrested and
charged with his murder but was acquitted at trial. The
case remains unsolved.
Patrolman Hostetter had served with the Marion City Police
Department for 5 years. He was survived by his wife and
four children.
